Meet Linda Blackwood, MALT Volunteer

After moving to the San Geronimo Valley 36 years ago, Linda Blackwood has become an expert on Marin’s open space. She and her dog have tackled all the local trails and parks, and she has yet to find an open area they’ve missed. “Being surrounded by trees and wildlife has been a wonderful environment for me and my pets. Just driving around West Marin, with all its open land and hillsides dotted with sheep and cows, was always a way for me to relax from the stresses of work.”

As Linda got to know the landscapes of the region, she became a fixture of the MALT community, frequently attending events at farms and ranches, and offering decades-long support to our work. When she retired, she wanted to contribute her time and effort as a MALT volunteer.

Linda has volunteered with MALT for 25 years, helping to facilitate parking, hikes, and even stuffing envelopes, all with deep appreciation from our staff. But her favorite way to support is on the land, talking to the ranchers.

“A highlight of every spring is the wildflower walk on Leiss Ranch. I’ve done that many times as both a participant and a volunteer in all kinds of weather.”

While Linda is not alone in her appreciation of the dazzling, seasonal displays of Marin’s agricultural land, by volunteering with MALT she has had the unique opportunity to connect directly with our local ecosystem. MALT’s events provide opportunities to meet the dedicated farmers and animals that contribute to our food supply, allowing deeper understanding of sustainable agriculture and the work that brings local produce to our tables.

“Many of the property owners have fascinating stories about their journeys to MALT, which they are eager to share.”

In her time volunteering, Linda has learned about dairy farming, growing row crops, cheese making and more. She’s been able to visit iconic Marin landmarks like the top of Black Mountain, which provided a spectacular view even through the fog (and she’s hoping for better luck at this year’s upcoming Black Mountain Ranch hike).

Volunteering with MALT offers a unique and enriching experience that goes beyond traditional community service. As a volunteer, you gain exclusive access to the breathtaking beauty of Marin’s open space and natural landscapes, immersing yourself in an environment that few get to enjoy. This hands-on experience fosters a meaningful connection between the land and the community while supporting the preservation of Marin’s agricultural heritage.

“Being a MALT volunteer provides an opportunity to get out on the land, meet the farmers and ranchers, and help to make visitors’ experiences more enjoyable while answering their questions about MALT. It is truly gratifying to help with MALT’s effort to preserve the agricultural nature of Marin.”

Together, you are the heart of our mission, and we are deeply grateful for your contributions to protecting the land we all cherish.
