A Farewell From Jamison

June 27, 2020

I write to let you know that after seven years, I will be stepping away from my role as MALT’s executive director; my last day with the organization will be July 31.

My time with MALT has been incredibly fulfilling. I am proud to have led a team of staff and board members who successfully completed a comprehensive strategic planning process; recruited exceptional staff; and collaborated to develop a holistic approach to farmland preservation.

It has been an exciting time for MALT. While we continue to use conservation easements as a central tool for farmland protection, we’re also teaming up with Marin’s farmers and ranchers, and all of our partner agencies, to ensure farming and ranching remain financially and environmentally sustainable for future generations. That work includes advancing carbon farming locally and preserving natural resources through our land stewardship program. The organization is also preparing to roll out initiatives to support next generation farmers.

Every time I walk on a MALT-protected ranch, I am struck by the peace of the land and the abundant life it sustains. I am humbled and grateful to have had the opportunity to serve all of you: the farmers, ranchers, agency partners, volunteers, staff, board and supporters who make this organization work. In the four decades since Ellen Straus and Phyllis Faber founded MALT, we have thrived at the center of an incredible nexus of interests: agriculture, food production, environmentalism and climate change mitigation. To have played a small part in that is a gift that will stay with me always.

While I love my work, it has become clear to me that I want to live my life with more intention, be more present with my family and recalibrate my work-life balance. It is in that spirit that I have tendered my resignation. MALT Director of Operations Ray Fort will assume the role of acting executive director during the search for my replacement.

If you have any questions regarding next steps for MALT, feel free to reach out directly to Ray Fort (rfort@malt.org) or MALT Board Chair Neil Rudolph (nlrmvl@gmail.com). I can assure you that MALT is in good hands, and we would love to connect and answer any questions you may have.

With gratitude,

Jamison Watts
Executive Director
