Education

Do you like to work with children? Are you interested in helping us teach them about our local farms and the fresh, healthy food that they produce?  MALT is currently accepting applications for new volunteers who want to work on our increasingly popular Farm Field Studies (FFS) Program, which brings schoolchildren out of the classroom and onto the land to experience first-hand what farming and ranching is all about.

MALT partners with several local farms and ranches including Windrush Farms, Gospel Flats, Paradise Valley Produce, Bivalve Dairy, Drake’s Bay Oysters and Tresch Dairy.  This spring, we will bring over 30 classrooms and more than 700 students to the farm where they may milk a goat, mix feed rations for dairy cows, grind wheat for bread, or plant tiny seedlings in a row.

Volunteers don’t need to be experienced with childhood education as we will train you to be docents and pair you up with experienced volunteers to start.  However, a desire to work with kids and the availability to work at least one weekday a month is a must.

Our two-day 2010 volunteer training is taking place on Saturday, January 30, and Saturday, February 27, 2010.  The orientation includes an extensive overview of MALT's programs and mission, as well as training specifically related to the Farm Field Studies Program. Tours to a local farm or two are also included.  Pre-registration is required.  Please contact Mia Pelletier at mpelletier@malt.org or call us at 415-663-1338 ext. 311.
