10 Ways You Can Help
Save Marin County Farmland

1. Become a MALT member

Membership is the heart and soul of our success. Since its founding in 1980, MALT has protected more than 41,600 acres of land on 65 family farms and ranches, but 60,000 acres are still at risk. Your annual gift provides the solid base of support that MALT needs to perform its critical work - acquisition, stewardship and education. If you are already a member, please continue your annual support, and consider an additional gift to the Ellen Straus Farmland Preservation Fund.

2. Bay Area Special License PlateSupport agricultural education with
a special license plate order!

Now there's a new way to support California agriculture. When you purchase this special interest license plate you are investing in the next generation of our ag industry's innovators, entrepreneurs, and leaders. Your purchase will directly support Agricultural Education, Agricultural Career Awareness, Agricultural Career Training, and Youth Leadership Development. Visit www.CalAgPlate.com for more information.

3. Sign up for eScrip

Simply register your grocery club cards and debit/credit cards with eScrip, and a percentage of your purchases at participating merchants will go to MALT's farmland preservation program. Local stores include Andronico's, Woodland Markets, Macy's, Eddie Bauer, and Mollie Stone's.

After registering, you will be able to shop at local stores or the Online Mall.

4. Support local farmers and ranchers

Shop at farmers' markets and ask your grocer to stock Marin County dairy products and organic fruits and vegetables grown in Marin. To find a farmer's market, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), or other sources of local food in your neighborhood, use the search box below, courtesy of LocalHarvest
Type in your Zip Code or City, then hit 'return' or 'enter':

5. Visit a farm

Point Reyes was the birthplace of the dairy industry in California, and Marin County still provides 20% of the Bay Area's milk. To learn more, join us on one of our Hikes and Tours or attend one of our educational Lectures or Events. Contact Constance Washburn at 415-663-1338 or cwashburn@malt.org.

6. Maintain a tradition of preserving farmland

Thirty years ago, enlightened citizens and local officials began to try to protect West Marin through a combination of legislation, zoning, and the creation of MALT. You can play a vital role in continuing the work they began. Understand ballot measures that affect agriculture on county, state and national levels and vote for measures that support local agriculture and family farms.

7. Ask your school district to include agricultural education in its curriculum

School gardens and agricultural education help children learn that food comes from farms, not from grocery stores. MALT'S Farm Field Studies Program welcomes school groups to visit farms and provides teachers with appropriate curriculum materials to make the visit a true learning experience. Contact Constance Washburn at 415-663-1338 or cwashburn@malt.org.

8. Write a guest editorial

Support farmland protections and Marin Agricultural Land Trust's farmland conservation program in a guest editorial to your local newspaper or favorite blog. Contact Director of Development Kristine Ball at 415-663-1158, ext. 318 or kball@malt.org.

9. Let your legislators know you care about preserving farmland in Marin

Contact Marin County Supervisor Steve Kinsey, State Assemblyman Jared Huffman, State Senator Mark Leno, U.S. Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey, U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer, and U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein.
