10 Ways You Can Help
Save Marin County Farmland

1. Support local farmers and ranchers. Shop at farmers' markets and ask your grocer to stock Marin County dairy products and organic fruits and vegetables grown in Marin.

2. Spread the word about MALT and farmland protection. Throughout the United States, nearly one million acres of farmland were bulldozed for sprawl development last year. Since its founding in 1980, MALT has protected more than 40,500 acres of Marin farmland, but 75,000 acres are still at risk.

3. Maintain a tradition. Thirty years ago, enlightened citizens and local officials began to try to protect West Marin through a combination of legislation, zoning, and the creation of MALT. You can play a vital role in continuing the work they began. If you're a Marin resident, help safeguard the natural and cultural resources that make Marin a national treasure by participating in the update of the Marin Countywide Plan.

4. Rediscover history. Point Reyes was the birthplace of the dairy industry in California, and Marin County still provides 20% of the Bay Area's milk. To learn more, join us on one of our hikes and tours or attend one of our educational lectures or events.

5. Ask your school district to include agricultural education in its curriculum. School gardens and agricultural education help children learn that food comes from farms, not from grocery stores. Contact Constance Washburn at 415-663-1338 or cwashburn@malt.org.

6. Be our eyes and ears. Clip and send us local coverage of farmland issues. You can help us identify emerging threats to Marin County farmland.

7. Write a guest editorial for your local newspaper supporting farmland protection and Marin Agricultural Land Trust's agricultural conservation program. Contact Associate Director Elisabeth Ptak at 415-663-1158, ext.302, or eptak@malt.org.

8. Let your legislators know you care about preserving farmland in Marin. Contact Marin County Supervisor Steve Kinsey, State Assemblyman Jared Huffman, State Senator Carole Migden, U.S. Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey, U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer, and U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein.
