Profiles in Preservation
Fred & Karen Dolcini Ranch, Chileno Valley
1992
MALT has completed the purchase of a conservation easement on the 1,003 acre Fred Dolcini Ranch, bringing the total number of permanently preserved acres of Marin County farmland to 24,444. This marks MALT's 36th conservation easement and the organization's continued success at helping agriculture thrive in Marin County.
The Fred Dolcini Ranch property is used for a Grade A dairy operation. Approximately 780 cows are grazed on the property, including 300 milk cows, 60 dry cows, and 400 heifers. In 1992 Fred Dolcini won top honors for being the first dairy in the region to achieve annual production of more than 1,000 pounds of butterfat per dairy cow.
MALT's purchase of a conservation easement on the Dolcini Ranch will enable the Dolcinis to buy out a 50% interest in the property, consolidating the title to the property in one owner. Without the sale of an easement to MALAT the property would probably been sold to allow division of the interests. Such a sale would have involved a high likelihood that the dairy would be discontinued and the property converted to non-agricultural use.
The ranch is located near the Sonoma County line Chileno Valley Road about seven miles west of Petaluma.
